THE REST OF THE STORY ...

The design team was hired to do a complete home remodel for the homeowners. They loved the neighborhood, but the home itself lacked character. This particular buffet/bar area was dated and the homeowners wanted it removed to open up the kitchen.

In the process of taking out the wall separating the kitchen and family room, the design team found two structural steel columns within it. One was noted on the building plans, but the second was a surprise!

The homeowners were initially discouraged by the news, but the team cleverly designed a beautiful buffet using Showplace Cabinetry to hide the columns. It gives the homeowners more storage space for supplies. The custom beams were crafted by the design team using ghost wood timbers.

The design team was successfully able to turn the surprise into the most highlighted and appreciated part of the home. It quickly became the most popular conversational piece at their cocktail parties.

The design team LOVES the finished look of this area. It truly delivers on the homeowners' desire to add character to their home.

The homeowners were referred to the team by a local home inspector. After visiting the showroom and seeing samples of Showplace Cabinetry, they knew they were in good hands.

The design team enjoyed working with the homeowners because they trusted the team to overcome a major design hurdle in their renovation. The existence of the "surprise" structural steel column required a re-design and their faith that the team could still deliver the home they had been dreaming of.

COMMENTS FROM OUR JUDGES ...

Expected beams are hard. Unexpected beams are extremely hard! You did a great job making them flow in the space, all while adding the character the homeowners desired. Nice Job!

You opened up space and gave the homeowners a functional buffet to meet their needs. You did a great job working around the structural beams.

All of the colors flow very well together, adding character to this space. The beams, flooring, and backsplash in the kitchen all tie together well!

This space functions great off of the kitchen and gives them the storage they need here. When entertaining guests they will not feel like they're in a completely different room.

Nice way of incorporating the structural columns with the new bar. It connects with the kitchen, but is also a nice transition space with the rest of the space.

Yes, the details of the columns being wrapped in wood and then adding cabinetry in between to make them look like a design element in the bar was clever.

Nice wine zone and serving zone between the columns.

Fun!

What a great way to turn an unwelcomed surprise into a great design!

The beams really bring together the space with the flooring and tile and create a WOW factor!

Lots of great added storage.

What a great way to divide a space but keep it open and airy. Love the contrast of the structural pieces opposing the cabinetry. Everything is easy to access and looks sleek. Nice job!
