Characteristics

Keep in mind that we are unable to control knot amount or placement or grain or color consistency, and any occurrence of these natural imperfections are not considered warrantable.

For example, you can pair rustic wood cabinets with a sleek, modern countertop for a chic, contemporary look. Or you can pair them with a natural stone backsplash for a more traditional, warm feel.

Rustic wood is also known for its durability and strength. Whether you choose alder or hickory, rustic wood cabinets can stand up to the wear and tear of a busy home.

Color Variations

This cabinet is finished in our Autumn stain on rustic alder. Notice the light and dark areas? The inconsistencies are acceptable and would not be replaced as per the terms of our warranty.

Knots and Color

This cabinet is finished in our Driftwood stain on rustic alder. Some would prefer to have more knots or to have knots in other locations than near a door profile or a possible hardware location. Remember that we are unable to control knot placement or amount.

Color and Knots

This beautiful cabinet is finished in Tawny stain on rustic hickory. You may notice inconsistency in the color and number of knots per door. Random knots and color variations add character and are acceptable.

Variety

This cabinet showcases the beauty of rustic hickory with our Natural finish. The variety of wood tones and the random placement provide a gorgeous, rustic look.

Smart Ways to Save Money on a Kitchen Remodel

There are many things you can do to save money on your next remodel project. Your designer may have other ideas, but here are just a few ways to get more for your money when you begin your kitchen refresh.

Before we get to the “Do’s” in budget-friendly remodeling, here is an important “Don’t.”

You’ve heard the saying, “You get what you pay for.” That is certainly true when it comes to cabinetry. No matter what brand you choose, make sure that your cabinets are constructed with high quality materials and methods. In other words, don’t base your decision solely on price. You may regret your decision after just a couple years.

Showplace Cabinetry offers several cabinet lines to meet your style and budget needs. All of our framed lines are KCMA-certified and meet all construction quality requirements. So, you know you’re getting a great product with a limited lifetime warranty to give you additional ease of mind.

Now, the “Do’s” for a successful, budget-friendly remodel project…

Keep it Simple

Simple layout and design ideas can help you save money.

Use larger cabinets rather than smaller cabinets to reduce the work for the installer, saving time and money.
Leave space between the wall cabinets and the ceiling to avoid the need for trim molding (This is a modern look, too!).
Use flat panel doors in your design to save money and provide a simple, clean look.
Avoid costly cabinet modifications.
Use floating shelves rather than book cases or cabinets to save money and gives you a more spacious look.
Avoid moving utilities if possible.

Get Creative

You can do things to save money and stretch your dollar even further!

Use laminate countertops instead of stone or quartz. Laminate tops are very durable and have many color and pattern options.
Do as much of the labor and material running as you can to avoid charges by contractors.
If possible, try selling your old cabinets and using that towards your project. The buyer may even be willing to remove the cabinets for you to save you time and money.

Other Ideas

Some other ways to help you pay for your remodel project are:

Ask your designer to create more than one layout option to see what it takes to get the best price and value.
Ask your designer if they offer low-interest financing to allow you to get more done.

First, the history… Since its beginnings in 1999, Showplace Wood Products (now doing business as “Showplace Cabinetry”) has been one of the fastest growing cabinetry brands in America. From the start, this success has been grounded in Showplace people: A team of hardworking, results-oriented workers, managers and directors who care about what they do. In a world of seemingly endless choices, their creativity and hard work has made Showplace the brand of choice for 1000+ dealers and thousands of customers around the country.

In the time of constant mergers and acquisitions by distant holding companies, the founding shareholders of Showplace chose a different path. Showplace Cabinetry: Built Tough

Framed Showplace Cabinetry is KCMA-certified, passing the toughest tests of durability and performance in the marketplace today.

These independent tests evaluate the integrity of cabinets in the following categories. If you want quality cabinets in your home that will last, know that Showplace cabinets have been certified by the KCMA and have this seal of certification.

Cabinet Structure – Loading cabinet shelving with 15 pounds per square foot, gradually loading mounted cabinets to 600 pounds, and dropping a three-pound weight at six inches above the cabinet bottom to evaluate the overall strength and durability.

Drawer Operation – Cycling drawers 25,000 times fully-loaded with 15 pounds per square foot, representing roughly 20 years of regular use.

Door Operation – Opening and closing cabinet doors 25,000 times and testing their ability to withstand 65 pounds of hanging weight.

Cabinetry Finish – Exposing cabinets to stain threats like vinegar, grape juice, coffee, alcohol, and even mustard for varying amounts of time to ensure any discoloration can be easily cleaned without any lasting damage.

Temperature – Placing cabinets in a humid heat-box for 24 hours at 120-degrees to ensure no finish blistering or discoloration.

The Showplace Limited Lifetime Warranty

If you’ve recently purchased Showplace cabinets, here are the details of our Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Limited Lifetime Warranty

Showplace Wood Products (“Showplace Cabinetry” or “Showplace”) provides a Limited Lifetime Warranty to the original owners of the installed residential cabinetry (the “Product”) and warrants its Product to be free from defects in material or workmanship under normal residential use for as long as the Product is owned by the original residential purchaser in the Product’s originally installed residential location. (The Longview by Showplace cabinet line is excluded from this warranty. See dealer for warranty information.)

This warranty applies only when the Product is purchased through an authorized Showplace dealer, is not applicable to rental properties and is not transferable to subsequent owners.

Our obligation under this warranty is limited to the repair or replacement of any Products that prove defective as determined by our review and inspection. This warranty is limited to replacement or repair of defective parts or materials only. Labor charges or damage related to installation, removal, repair or exchange, as well as any incidental and consequential damages, are excluded.

Showplace reserves the right to change design specifications and materials without obligation to make similar changes to products previously manufactured. If a warranty claim is filed for a product that is no longer manufactured by Showplace, Showplace reserves the right to fulfill the warranty obligation by substituting discontinued product with the most similar styling, wood species, and color available at the time a claim is submitted; claim remedy may include replacing other Showplace components installed in the residential application necessary to achieve a uniform appearance and a similar style to that originally purchased.

Whether replacing current or retired product, we cannot guarantee an exact match of replacement parts due to the natural aging process that occurs in products currently installed.

Items Not Covered

This Limited Lifetime Warranty is void and does not cover Product if it is:

misused or used for a purpose not intended or designed by us
mishandled or subjected to abuse, vandalism, negligence or accident
improperly stored before installation: product must be covered prior to installation and kept in an environment with controlled temperature and humidity out of direct sunlight at all times
improperly installed or modified: Product must not be installed outdoors, or reconfigured by the installer
subjected to extreme temperatures or extreme moisture levels after installation: Product must be kept at all times in a space within controlled ranges of 50-85 degrees Fahrenheit and 30-55% humidity.

This Limited Lifetime Warranty does not apply to

damage caused by acts of God, fire, flood, or other influences outside of our control
damage caused by normal wear and tear. Examples include, but are not limited to, damage resulting from moisture around sinks and/or moisture from hands transferred to cabinetry without wiping away; impact-caused nicks or chips in finish (paint or stain); toe kick damage caused by excessive moisture allowed to remain after cleaning floors; finish damage caused by spills, splatters etc. on trash units
finishes that are exposed for prolonged periods of time to tobacco smoke and/or other smoke sources
cabinetry purchased unfinished
items discontinued by Showplace or our vendors

Outsourced Products

Some Products purchased through but not made by Showplace, which are limited in warranty by the maker of the Product, will follow the warranty provided by the Product’s manufacturer. Products with such limited warranty include:

Vent hoods and blowers (5 years on parts, with the exception of the
LBGG24.250 & LBGG30.250 units, which is 1 year)
Internal hardware kits, such as waste baskets and pullouts (1 year)
Richelieu aluminum doors (1 year)
Gothic mullion doors (No warranty)
Foil-wrapped and High Gloss doors and drawer fronts (5 years)
3-piece and 5-piece Textured doors and drawer fronts (5 years)
Wood veneer slab doors and drawer fronts (5 years)
Blum hinges and glides (lifetime)

The following changes and characteristics are considered natural and normal and are excluded from the Limited Lifetime Warranty:

Wood and finish coloration: There is no prevention for the process of wood darkening or mellowing with age. The natural darkening and mellowing that normally occurs, or the yellowing of finish resulting from exposure to sunlight and/or other environmental conditions should be accepted as part of the natural aging process.

Natural (unfinished) wood: Characteristics inherent to the wood species, such as knots, pinholes, graining, or sapwood defined as acceptable within our wood purchase specifications or the differences in stain coloring that occurs between veneered plywood components and solid hardwood components.

Rustic species: Rustic species will display visible knots, pinholes, mineral streaks, sapwood and other rustic characteristics, and will have color variation between veneered plywood components and solid hardwood components; more specifically (but not limited to) the door frame and center panel. All of these characteristics are acceptable within our wood purchase specifications. The size, number and location of these characteristics will naturally vary from piece to piece (some product will not have any characteristics). Horizontal glue lines will be visible on 1/4” flat-panel rustic door styles. Showplace recommends solid panel door styles and the viewing of several samples to become familiar with the wide variation that will be present in a rustic cabinet order.

Showplace will NOT warranty the following:
-The customer does not like the appearance of the knot (shape, color, size, texture, etc.)
-The knot interferes with hardware placement
-The item in question is lacking knots or characteristics
-The knot is soft or spongy
-Tear out/rough edges

Natural finish: Cabinets produced with Natural finish will have clear sealer and top coat applied, but no base coat color of stain; this allows you to clearly see the natural variations in the wood. All woods have many color characteristics, grain patterns, and certain markings that are innate in each species, and a Natural finish allows them to show more than a stained or painted finish does. Such variations should not be thought of as defects or imperfections and are not covered by the Showplace warranty; for less variation, order a door style with a solid center panel.

Standard stains: Wood has inherent variations in color, grain, and natural markings like mineral streaking. These variations will be more apparent in lighter stains. The most variation will be visible in the Natural finish (see above). Also note that the application of a glaze can tint the base stain, resulting in a different appearance from the base stain alone. For less variation, order a door style with a solid center panel. (Read our blog post about what to expect with stained cabinets.)

Character stains: The appeal of character stains is their ability to provide a rich, somewhat translucent look that accentuates characteristics that occur naturally in wood. This includes (but is not limited to) grain patterns, certain markings and knots. Wood density will also cause stain color variations, sometimes even giving the wood a completely different hue, that will be more obvious in a character stain. All of these elements are considered normal and will not be covered under warranty. (Read about our Character stains.)

Making final selections based on a full-size door sample, in desired wood specie, is necessary when considering a character stain.

Paints: Paint is a coating that is not absorbed into the wood; nicks, chips and scratches on painted product are considered normal wear and tear and are not covered under warranty. (Read our blog post about what to expect with painted cabinets.)

Red oak paints are produced with a different process that is intended to enhance grain and give a slightly weathered impression. No putty is used on face joints or end grain. Because of this special process, red oak paints are not available in beaded-panel or applied-molding door styles.
Joinery: You can expect to see some joinery lines in all painted cabinetry. One common place for joinery to be visible is where the stile and rail meet on a cabinet door, drawer header or frame. This is a natural characteristic of the finish process, and not considered a flaw, therefore not covered under our warranty.
Paint grade doors use HDM for the center panel which minimizes expansion and contraction, but joint lines may still appear because paint grade doors have natural wood frames that will expand and contract more than the HDM center panel.
HDM door styles are the most dimensionally stable. They are the best choice for painted cabinetry in coastal regions, or other areas of high humidity, but may still show joint lines over time.

Moisture/humidity: Minor dimensional changes due to the wood’s hygroscopic nature. Because wood constantly absorbs and releases moisture with the environment it will shrink or swell to varying degrees depending on the species; this may result in visible lines around door center panels if not properly controlled that will come and go with seasonal changes in humidity. It may also result in door warpage up to 1/16” per foot which must be allowed to re-acclimate for a full twelve months over the course of changes in seasons. (Read our blog post about the effects of humidity.)

Mitered joints may tend to open and close with changes of season or humidity levels. Open joints are not a sign of joint failure and no warranty applies. We DO warrant against joint failure such as complete weakening or joint breakage.
Painted finishes may reveal joinery lines due to natural dimensional changes.

KAAT and slab doors: Showplace outsources select door styles, which are ordered as “Kitchen at a Time” (KAAT) and are not produced in our door plant. As most of our KAAT doors are veneered slab doors, they may show stain differently than some of our other non-KAAT door styles, especially if a Character stain is chosen; for this reason, if a KAAT door style is chosen, you must sell the job off of a KAAT door sample or it will not be covered under our warranty.

Veneered flat center panel doors: Door styles that use a 1/4” veneered flat center panel will display a degree of finish color variation from the solid-wood frame. This variation is considered normal and can occur in all finishes, including Natural.

Because wood is a natural substance, many factors can cause different parts of the wood to accept finish differently. These factors are out of our control, and for this reason, finish variations on flat panel doors are not covered under the Showplace warranty. For less variation, order a door style with a solid center panel. Any five-piece header (FPH) that is less than 7” high will have 1/4” thick hardwood plywood center panel, and as such will display a degree of stain color variation.

Hand application: Showplace specialty finishes are the result of hand crafting. As such, variation is to be expected, and is in fact considered an attribute. This includes glazed finishes with stain or paint, any of the Vintage processes or distressed offerings, and different components of the Weathered process. Such variations are not covered by the Showplace warranty.

Unfinished: Unfinished orders are supplied without any stain, sealer or topcoat. Showplace cannot warranty finishes that are applied by the customer.

This Limited Lifetime Warranty does not cover costs associated with shipping or transportation of replacements, the cost of installation, removal, or subsequent damage or transportation of the defective product, regardless of who performs the work.

These warranties are the exclusive warranties of Showplace Wood Products and are in lieu of all other warranties, expressed or implied, including the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular use. In no event shall Showplace Wood Products be liable for incidental or consequential damages,
special damages, exemplary damages, lost profits and revenues, loss of use of the product, bodily injury, and property damage, all whether based on contract, tort, strict liability, or any other legal basis or theory. In no event will Showplace’s liability with respect to the warranty obligations exceed the purchase price for the defective product.

To obtain performance under this Limited Lifetime Warranty, the end consumer must contact the authorized Showplace dealer where the Product was originally purchased and allow sufficient time and opportunity to inspect the Product, evaluate the claim and respond. A dated receipt as proof of purchase is required to obtain benefits from this warranty. If the authorized Showplace dealer is unable to respond to your claim, contact Showplace Cabinetry. All decisions regarding the existence of manufacturing defects or affecting this warranty shall be made by Showplace in its discretion and shall be final and binding on the parties. This Limited Lifetime Warranty is governed by the laws of the State of South Dakota. All disputes arising from this limited warranty will be venued in the state or federal courts sitting in South Dakota.

Painted Cabinets: 3 Things to Know

Painted cabinets are popular and also require a commitment from the homeowner to keep them in pristine condition, typically more maintenance than stained cabinetry. If you plan to select painted cabinetry for your home, here are three things to know about paint on wood surfaces.

Paint characteristics are the same, no matter the brand, the surface, or the cabinet manufacturer. What can you expect when you buy painted cabinets from Showplace?

As described in our blog about stains, wood allows stains to soak into wood and take on some of the character of the wood.

Paint, on the other hand, just sits on top of surfaces, including wood used for cabinets. We go to great lengths to ensure your cabinets look like new for as long as possible, but here are 3 things to expect from painted cabinets.

Open Door Joints

When we build our doors, we use glue and joint grooves to construct the doors. Then, we place all doors in a clamp that presses the joints together until the glue dries. This process ensures that the door construction is as solid as possible.

Change in climate, meaning high or low humidity, may cause wood to shrink or expand, causing paint to crack at those joints where there may be the most movement. This is normal and is not considered a warranty event.

Surface Damage

Even though we move all finished parts through a large oven to bake on a top coat for all finishes, that is no match for life with kids and pets.

Toys, claws, pots and pans, utensils, and other hard, sharp surfaces can still do damage to our paint and this is not covered under our warranty.

Surface damage includes stain spots, chips, paint wear, scratches, and more.

Water Damage

Just like with the wear and tear from living around your cabinets, water and other liquids can also damage painted surfaces.

You may see abnormal wear to your paint on cabinets around a sink or waste basket cabinet.

It’s important to note that touch up kits for our standard paints are an easy tool to help with maintenance on chips and blemishes. Be sure to ask your dealer to include a kit with your painted order. Read our warranty here.

Wood Grain and Stain: 3 Things to Know

If you plan to select stained cabinetry for your home, here are three things to know about how wood grain can affect the look of your stained cabinetry.

No matter where you purchase your cabinets, you will most likely select a wood species that is universal among all manufacturers, so the results will be very similar.

Stains respond differently to the species of wood you choose. Each type of wood has a different level of density and grain characteristic that determines how the stain will soak in and appear. The pattern of graining is unique to each wood species.

Of course, light also affects the look of any finish. See our blog post on the effects of light on cabinet color.

Let’s take a look at some cabinets in our factory to see how the look of stain changes with different graining.

Grain Pattern

As you can see, this vanity cabinet has doors and slab drawer headers with varying grain patterns which change the look of our Thunder stain on red oak.

The slab drawer headers and door frames are made of solid wood. The customer opted to choose doors with veneered plywood center panels instead of solid wood panels. The grain is horizontal on the headers, causing the stain to appear darker than the doors that have vertical graining.

The door center panels are made of veneered plywood, which also have varying grain characteristics.

This look is acceptable and shows the uniqueness of stained woods.

Quartersawn White Oak Cashew drawer base cabinet

Cut Direction

The drawer headers on this three-drawer base cabinet are made of quartersawn white oak finished with our Cashew stain. We also used our Weathering process with Walnut accents to create a worn look.

Notice the cut pattern causes the stain to soak in differently, creating a beautiful look with the variety of graining.

The varying levels of light and darkness in the finish of this Character Stain show the true beauty of this wood and cut.

This look is also acceptable and typical of this type of wood.

Heart or Sap Wood

Of course, even natural wood has a variety of looks without a stain to highlight those variances.

Grain varies, causing the look to be different on each piece used to build a cabinet, but so does the presence of sap or heart wood.

This pair of natural walnut cabinets highlights how wood color varies when light areas of sap wood are present.

This look is acceptable and shows the true character of woods like walnut.
