Exposed Brick

The homeowner’s sold their farm and moved to be close to their adult daughter and son-in-law, in preparation of grandparenthood. The house that was purchased had a small, old kitchen, original to the house. The small kitchen was next to a small dining room. The new owners wanted to open the space to make one large eat-in kitchen that would be conducive to having their growing family over for dinners.

They wanted to use the wrought iron lamps in the adjoining family room as inspiration for the kitchen. They also wanted an updated, white, bright kitchen, but wanted it to look like it belonged in the house and didn’t appear too modern.

The designer decided to add “aged” faux beams to the kitchen to make it look older. Adding mirrors to the wall cabinets on the refrigerator wall helped to give those seated at the island a nice view (reflection of the yard) and increased the amount of light in the room. Taking down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, (both of which had a bay window), helped to increase the amount of light in the room.

The larger, more usable space can accommodate a growing family with ease.
