Statement Under the Stairs
This fun and functional bar was designed to maximize the space beneath a custom steel staircase, transforming an often-overlooked area into a bold entertaining destination just off the main living space.
The dark cabinet finish was intentionally selected to create contrast against the adjoining white wood walls while complementing the black powder-coated staircase and railing above. The dramatic focal point of the space is the leathered “Crocodile” granite, used for both the bar top and the full-height backsplash. Its rich texture and movement add depth and a luxurious, tactile quality to the design.
Floating shelves serve a dual purpose: concealing a seam in the stone backsplash while providing stylish display space for spirits and glassware. Every detail was carefully considered to balance aesthetics and function.
One of the primary challenges was fitting all the desired features into a compact footprint. To accommodate two side-by-side wine coolers, a landing was extended at the top of the stairs, subtly adjusting the stair angle to create additional width below. This thoughtful structural solution allowed room for a small sink, ice maker, beverage center, and dedicated storage for liquor, ensuring the bar is as practical as it is striking.
Behind the bar and staircase, a large barn door with applied birch panels slides to conceal a required steel roll-down door separating the finished living space from the adjacent car showroom. While the steel door meets code requirements, the decorative birch-clad barn door provides a beautiful, cohesive solution. The black and white birch panels echo the cabinet finishes and mirror the home’s exterior siding, seamlessly tying interior and exterior design together.
The result is a compact but impactful entertaining space that is bold, intentional, and brilliantly engineered.
