Who is the KCMA and Why is Showplace a Member?

Showplace is proud to be a member of the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA). You may wonder what this organization is and why it’s important to be a member. Let’s talk about it.

A strong American cabinet industry is very important to Showplace Cabinetry and our employee owners. One of the most important ways we support the industry is through our active involvement in the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA).

So what is the KCMA? According to the KCMA.org website, “The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1955 to represent companies who manufacture cabinets, bath cabinets, or other residential cabinets and key kitchen and bath industry suppliers. With a membership now more than 300 strong throughout North America, KCMA works to advance the cabinet industry through advocacy, setting cabinet quality standards, sponsoring kitchen and bath cabinet-related research and providing the cabinet industry with management tools and educational programs.”

The KCMA provides resources to help companies succeed, but they also provide legal support and advocacy for its members and the industry.

High Praise

Bill Allen, Showplace CEO, has high praises for the organization. “There is no other organization that is more devoted to promoting American cabinet manufacturers than the KCMA. Through the KCMA, information is available on various aspects of our business such as: government regulations, wage and labor surveys, safety, trend of business statistics, and much more.”

The KCMA has played a vital role as a champion of fair trade for the domestic cabinet industry while fighting against unfairly traded imported cabinets from China. The KCMA also administers trusted certification programs promoting ANSI construction standards, severe use and environmental stewardship that have been recognized as industry standards for decades.

In 2022, Showplace employees (pictured above) were honored to host a plant tour as part of the fall conference for the members of the KCMA, including executives from many manufacturers from around the country.

Color Variations

This cabinet is finished in our cashew stain on rustic alder. Notice the light and dark areas? The inconsistencies are acceptable and would not be replaced as per the terms of our warranty.

Knots and Color

This cabinet is finished in our Montana stain on rustic alder. Some would prefer to have more knots or to have knots in other locations than near a door profile or a possible hardware location. Remember that we are unable to control knot placement or amount.

Color and Knots

This beautiful cabinet is finished in Tawny stain on rustic hickory. You may notice inconsistency in the color and number of knots per door. Random knots and color variations add character and are acceptable.

Variety

This cabinet showcases the beauty of rustic hickory with our Natural finish. The variety of wood tones and the random placement provide a gorgeous, rustic look.

Additionally, there is no limit to size, number, or location of knots on a cabinet or door part. The quality requirement is that a knot is sound and completely filled in. The images below are acceptable.

Face frames: 3/4″ thick select hardwood components, dadoed to receive tops, bottoms, and end panels
Backs: Feature 1/4” printed maple MDF (medium-density fiberboard) for a finished appearance
Hand-applied finish: sealed and given an oven-baked topcoat of catalyzed varnish for lasting durability, in satin or matte sheen
Drawers: soft-close and full-extension drawer glides are concealed under the dovetailed solid hardwood box and are the best in the industry. A dovetailed solid walnut drawer option is available
Shelves are a hefty 3/4″ thick and adjustable
Hinges: 6-way adjustable and with soft-close action are the best in the industry

The superior Showplace drawer has a four-sided solid hardwood box that is dovetailed for rigidity. The 1/4-inch drawer bottom is captive on all four sides. A dovetailed solid walnut drawer option is available.

Soft Close

Our drawer glide is a ball-bearing, full-extension undermount unit, out of sight and away from dirt and grime. It has a smooth soft-close action, and is rated for 75-pound dynamic loads as well as 100-pound static loads.

More Storage

Opening height for top drawers in base cabinets are an industry leading 5-1/2″ tall; this provides increased storage depth to keep contents from catching when drawers are opened.

Showplace is a 100% employee-owned company. What does that mean and why does it matter? Let’s take a deeper look at what it’s like to be an employee-owner and why that benefits you when you purchase Showplace cabinets.

First, the history… Since its beginnings in 1999, Showplace Wood Products (now doing business as “Showplace Cabinetry”) has been one of the fastest growing cabinetry brands in America. From the start, this success has been grounded in Showplace people: A team of hardworking, results-oriented workers, managers and directors who care about what they do. In a world of seemingly endless choices, their creativity and hard work has made Showplace the brand of choice for 1000+ dealers and thousands of customers around the country.

In the time of constant mergers and acquisitions by distant holding companies, the founding shareholders of Showplace chose a different path. They were determined to perpetuate Showplace in a way that protects its employees and dealers from a large corporate entity that doesn’t share their vision. The founding team also sought to reward Showplace employees for their personal contributions to its ongoing success.

As a result, Showplace now exists as a 100% employee-owned company through the creation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). The move to an ESOP ensures the stability of Showplace into the future, while keeping the current board of directors, management, and day-to-day control unchanged.

Showplace is a certified member of the Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) of the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturer’s Association, and has a strong environmental commitment. Our modern production facilities are energy-efficient, and incorporate every opportunity for recycling and air quality protection. With our supplier partners, we promote the protection and sustainability of our world’s forest resources.

Our Commitment:

As an ESP manufacturer, all Showplace cabinets and facilities meet the following criteria:

Air Quality – Emissions from ESP certified cabinets are greatly reduced given the materials and finishes used in the manufacturing process.
Environmentally-sourced Products – Materials used to manufacture ESP certified cabinets are sourced in an environmentally-friendly way.
Environmentally-friendly Processes – Manufacturing processes track waste and implement opportunities to reduce, reuse, and recycle with a focus on energy conservation.

Showplace Cabinetry: Built Tough

Framed Showplace Cabinetry is KCMA-certified, passing the toughest tests of durability and performance in the marketplace today.

These independent tests evaluate the integrity of cabinets in the following categories. If you want quality cabinets in your home that will last, know that Showplace cabinets have been certified by the KCMA and have this seal of certification.

Cabinet Structure – Loading cabinet shelving with 15 pounds per square foot, gradually loading mounted cabinets to 600 pounds, and dropping a three-pound weight at six inches above the cabinet bottom to evaluate the overall strength and durability.

Drawer Operation – Cycling drawers 25,000 times fully-loaded with 15 pounds per square foot, representing roughly 20 years of regular use.

Door Operation – Opening and closing cabinet doors 25,000 times and testing their ability to withstand 65 pounds of hanging weight.

Cabinetry Finish – Exposing cabinets to stain threats like vinegar, grape juice, coffee, alcohol, and even mustard for varying amounts of time to ensure any discoloration can be easily cleaned without any lasting damage.

Temperature – Placing cabinets in a humid heat-box for 24 hours at 120-degrees to ensure no finish blistering or discoloration.

Pampas Stain From Showplace

(HARRISBURG, SD) – Showplace Cabinetry is excited to launch their newest character stain: Pampas. The name and stain are inspired by the light and feathery nature of ornamental pampas grass. Pampas is light tan stain without overly warm undertones.

The creamy, light tan color is developed specifically for Quartersawn White Oak, although it will be available in Red Oak, Cherry, Maple, Hickory, Rustic Hickory, Rustic Alder and Straight Grains. Because it’s lighter in nature and a character stain, each species of wood uniquely interprets the finish, offering design and style flexibility.

“Our dealer network and consumers have been asking us to expand our stain collection to include lighter and cooler-toned stains,” said Lisa Myers, Product Development Manager. “There’s been this huge shift in interior design the last couple of years where people want natural elements and colors in their home. Pampas is developed to provide that light, natural wood tone without pulling too yellow or orange, allowing it to be extremely versatile to pair with paint, flooring, cabinetry hardware and other home elements.”

Product innovation and development is key as Showplace Cabinetry continues to grow and evolve. “Interior design trends and wood colors change fast,” said Myers. “Over the last 22 years since Showplace started building cabinets, we’ve seen blonde wood, golden oak, cherry reds, extremely dark stains, gray stains, black stains and now light stains are resurging again.”

Showplace Adds James M. Wiederrich to Its Board of Directors

(HARRISBURG, SD) – Showplace Cabinetry is pleased to announce James M. Wiederrich as its newest member of the Showplace Board of Directors.

Wiederrich is an attorney for Woods Fuller and has a forty year career focused on business and corporate law.

“I am excited to serve on the Showplace Board of Directors. Showplace’s relationship building philosophy is foundational to its success,” says Wiederrich. “Solid and trusting relationships are built with employees, vendors, dealers, and customers. I hope to enhance the company’s success through my own experiences in building long lasting relationships.”

Wiederrich is the first person from outside of the Showplace company to be added to the board of directors.

Showplace Cabinetry CEO Bill Allen welcomes the new addition. “We look forward to the skills, vast knowledge of business law and history of success that Jim will bring,” says Allen. “We have worked with Woods Fuller over the years and that partnership led us to consider Jim for our board. We are very grateful he accepted our offer.”

Wiederrich looks forward to applying his skill set and experience to the cabinet industry.

“The industry is always fast paced and changing. We need to continually look for new opportunities in how we do business, what we do for business, and how we can be more successful in the future,” says Wiederrich.

“There are only two directions a business can go. It either moves forward, or it goes backward. There is no such thing as staying even.”
